What is a Swiss Vignette?

All cars, vans and motorbikes up to 3.5 tonnes a required by Swiss law to purchase a vignette in order to drive on motorways in Switzerland.

The vignette is valid for 14 months and linked directly to your vehicle's number plate.

This digital vignette removes the need for a physical sticker while ensuring you can legally travel on all Swiss motorways and national roads. You don't need to display a physical sticker in your vehicle.

The digital registration linked to your license plate serves as proof of payment but it's recommended to keep your email confirmation accessible in case of questions.

Driving without a valid, official Swiss vignette (either a sticker or an e-vignette) may result in you getting a fine.

Who needs a vignette?

All vehicles and trailers weighing up to 3.5 tonnes must display a valid vignette when using Swiss motorways and national roads of class 1 and 2. This requirement applies to anyone passing through Switzerland including Swiss residents and foreign visitors. Vehicles above 3.5 tonnes must register for a separate vignette.

Driving on Swiss motorways and expressways without a valid vignette is illegal and results in significant penalties. Switzerland uses a unique flat-rate vignette system instead of toll booths, making the vignette mandatory for accessing approximately 1,549km of motorways throughout the country.

This extensive road network connects all major Swiss cities including Zurich, Geneva, Bern, Basel, Lausanne, and Lucerne, as well as vital international routes linking Switzerland to neighbouring France, Germany, Italy, and Austria.

Which roads require a Swiss vignette?

A vignette is required for all motorways and national roads (the β€œNationalstrassennetz”) that are signposted with green signs and an β€œA” road number, such as A1, A2, A3, and other A-roads across the country. These category 1 and 2 roads form the main highway network. Most cantonal and local roads, which use blue signage, do not require a vignette.
